What are e-cigs?

Standard e-cigarettes are the cigarette look-a-likes, a similar size to traditional cigarettes, but instead containing a battery and a cartomizer (a combination of the cartridge, holding the e-liquid and the atomizer). The glowing LED light on the end of the battery resembles the tip of a cigarette.

What are vaporizers?

Vaporizers are different than e-cigs in that they resemble a fountain pen, and look less like traditional cigarettes. They are made up of a large battery at one end, a clear reservoir tank in the middle, and a mouthpiece. Pressing a button on the battery activates the heating element which vaporizes the e-juice and releases vapor.  

They are larger in size, provide consistent nicotine delivery, and have long-lasting batteries. The vaporizer can be more costly to get started if compared to the basic e-cigs, but once you have your vaporizer pen, the eLiquid capsule refills are just as cheap as the e-cigs cartomizers.

What is Popcorn Lung?

Popcorn Lung (also known as Bronchiolitis Obliterans), is a serious disease in which the tiny air sacs in the lungs become scarred. It can lead to irreversible loss of lung function that can become so severe that a transplant is the only possible treatment.

Back in the early 2000s, workers in a microwave popcorn processing plant developed the disease (where its name originated), thought to be caused by exposure to flavoring chemical, ‘diacetyl’, something which is also found in certain brands of e-cigarettes.

Do E-Cigs cause popcorn lung?

A Harvard study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives analyzed a host of e-liquid flavors to discover their levels of diacetyl, as well as other chemicals — acetyl propionyl, and acetoin. Researchers found one or more of the three chemicals present in 92 percent of the 51 unique flavors of e-liquid, with diacetyl being identified in 39 of 51 flavors.

But tobacco control experts claim the study omits critical information and exaggerates the risks of flavored e-cigs, with many containing no diacetyl whatsoever, including all Logic products sold by ILoveEcigs. “Tobacco cigarette smoke contains high levels of diacetyl and acetyl propionyl, on average 100 and 10 times higher,” compared to average e-cigarette exposure, says Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos, an expert on e-cigarette research. Not only are levels of diacetyl far higher in tobacco smoke than e-cig vapor, but the levels of dangerous compounds found in many of the products studied “are absolutely minimal, and it is not expected to raise any concerns about human health effects,” he said.

Despite traditional tobacco smoke containing far higher levels of diacetyl than flavored e-cigarettes, there has not been a single confirmed case of a smoker contracting popcorn lung, leading people to wonder why the media have drawn so much attention to this in the first place.
