2018 Vaping Predictions

The vaping industry saw sweeping changes in 2017. Last July, in an unprecedented move, the FDA announced its new comprehensive plan for tobacco and nicotine regulation that included a positive stance on electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Across the pond, in the UK, the annual government-backed smoking cessation campaign, Stoptober, even promoted the use of e-cigarettes for the first time since its launch, alongside the nicotine patch, gum, and lozenges. So, what does 2018 hold for the vaping industry?

Vaping Campaigns

Although we haven’t reached that point quite yet in the US, get used to seeing more government-backed vaping campaigns in the UK, aimed at reducing misinformation surrounding e-cigs and encouraging their use to stop smoking. Following the success of Stoptober, British parliamentarians have urged the government to capitalize on the Public Health England (PHE) campaign and have recommended that the “Government and public health bodies should immediately start a continuous programme to accurately communicate the positive public health message of vaping to the remaining seven million smokers in the UK.”

Vaping Documentaries

While there have been some notable vaping documentaries produced in the past few years, namely A Billion Lives, vaping will continue to capture the interest of filmmakers around the world. While there will be documentaries that focus on the shift from smoking combustible cigarettes to e-cigs and the regulations surrounding it, the subject will also be approached by documentary makers from different angles. For instance, the vaping culture will receive more exposure, exploring the appeal of the growing industry, not just as a tool to stop smoking, but as a hobby for vaping enthusiasts across the globe.

Vaping Etiquette and Regulations

Although this topic has got quite a bit of attention in 2017, vapers and non-vapers will continue the debate on what is and isn’t appropriate vaping etiquette. As an increasing number of ex-smokers turn to e-cigarettes to help them quit, there will be more emphasis on where they can and cannot vape. While that’s part common sense, there will continue to be regulations put in place to regulate the practice.

Better Understanding of Vaping

Due to the change in the FDA’s position on e-cigarettes and the reduction of misinformation through vaping campaigns and documentaries, vaping will gradually shed its “bad-boy” image in many countries that will embrace the technology to fight smoking. As a result, more and more people will get a better understanding of the device, dispelling many of the myths and misconceptions about it.
