Combustible cigarettes vs. vaping: How do the nicotine levels vary?

One of the main reasons that people prefer vaping compared to smoking is that vaping gives them more control of their nicotine intake. Although many e-cigarettes do contain nicotine in the contents of their juices, it is a controlled level that is chosen by the vaper. Needless to say, it’s important to understand how nicotine levels vary between combustible cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

What is nicotine and what does it do to your body?

Nicotine, or nicotiana tabacum as it’s medically called, is part of the nightshade family (red peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and potatoes are also part of this plant family). Although nicotine is not a cancer-causing agent on its own, it is known to be highly addictive.

The side effects of the substance have the ability to affect your heart, hormones and your gastrointestinal system. Interestingly, nicotine is also sometimes used to treat memory loss in senior citizens.

Nicotine and smoking:

Nicotine is one of the main reasons people continue to smoke. Your body and brain crave the substance and the compulsion is hard to break. Simply put, the more nicotine there is in a cigarette, the more addictive that cigarette will be.

The average amount of nicotine in a single cigarette is between 6.17 mg and 28.86 mg, although you only actually inhale a portion of it, your body absorbs the nicotine that you inhale.

The scary part is that studies show that the lethal dose for adults is 30-60 mg, which means technically five cigarettes have enough nicotine-containing solution to kill an adult. Needless to say, the ability to ingest nicotine varies from person-to-person.

Nicotine and vaping:

Vaping compared to smoking gives users more control. Vapers have the ability to choose an e-liquid, offered in a variety of flavor capsules, that is best suited to their needs. E-cigarettes, such as the Logic Pro or the Logic Power, offer safer, simpler methods to enjoying nicotine. They heat the e-liquid into vapor, rather than burning material, which produces inhalable vapor. The vapor is then delivered to you ensuring that you have the same quantity each time you take a puff. As you become less dependent on nicotine, you have the ability to decrease your juice to a lower nicotine strength.

The first step to switching is to determine the nicotine strength you need, so that over time you can slowly wean yourself off of the addicting substance. This is comparable to how many cigarettes you were smoking daily.

  • 0mg/ml (zero nicotine e-cigs) – good for people who never smoked tobacco cigarettes, light smokers and anyone trying to cut out their nicotine dependency altogether.
  • 20mg/ml – (1.8% e-liquids) – good for light to moderate smokers, particularly those who used ‘light’ cigarettes.
  • 27mg/ml+ (2.4% and higher) – good for heavy cigarette smokers and smokers of unfiltered cigarettes.

  1. In reply to Joe.

    Hello Joe,

Unfortunately, it’s hard to guess as we don’t know what cigarettes really have in them and we don’t know your smoking habits. However, 7% of 1.3 mL is about 0.091.

    Best,
    I Love Ecigs

  2. Getting a bit confused! 😂 maybe it’s been a long day……trying to figure 1.3ML WITH A 7% nicotine content. Is that equivalent to 1 or 2 packs of let’s say Marlboro Lights which contain 0.8mg of nicotine per cigarette? Love to solve this. Just not clicking with me today.
