E-cigarette Etiquette: The Dos and Don’ts of Vaping

The Dos and Don'ts of Vaping

Unlike combustible cigarettes that produce smoke containing thousands of toxic chemicals, e-cigarettes generate vapor, which is much less noxious. However, due to their similar gaseous appearance, non-vapers often mistake vapor for smoke, and as a result, vaping in public places can be met with reactions ranging from mild annoyance to outright confrontation from those who either don’t know the difference or have a misconception that vapor is just as harmful as smoke from cigarettes.

What’s a vaper to do? Educate non-vapers to dispel the misconceptions at the risk of sounding overzealous or stop vaping in public altogether? Since e-cig etiquette is somewhat of a gray zone at the moment, we’ve put together a few dos and don’ts, or guidelines, to help you navigate the murky waters of vaping in public.

Do – research the laws in your city and state

Vaping regulations vary depending on your city and state, with some including e-cigarettes in indoor smoking bans and others exempting them from smoke-free laws and restrictions. As a vaper, it’s a good idea to research the regulations that apply to your place of residence.

Do – ask for permission

With cities and states enacting laws prohibiting vaping indoors, many establishments such as restaurants, movie theatres, and pubs will explicitly inform their patrons of such restrictions. However, if you are unsure, just ask before you start vaping.

The same goes for your friends’ and family’s houses. As a guest, make sure that they are comfortable with you vaping inside their home or on their property.

Do – educate people if they ask you questions

Many people, especially smokers, are curious about e-cigarettes. Educate them about the differences between traditional cigarettes and e-cigs, but be cautious not to be overly sanctimonious. Non-vapers are often surprised to learn that vaping without nicotine is an option.

Don’t vape in enclosed spaces

Although vapor may be less deleterious than smoke, due to the involuntary nature of secondhand exposure, be considerate to those around you and avoid vaping in confined spaces such as in a car or on public transportation. Note that using e-cigarettes on airplanes is prohibited.

Don’t blow clouds in people’s faces

While emitting large clouds of vapor may seem appealing to you, it may be bothersome to those around you. As a general rule, avoid blowing smoke in the direction of people, especially non-vapers.

Don’t vape with people in close proximity

Even in spaces where you have a legal right to smoke, if there are people nearby who could be exposed to secondhand vapor, don’t use your e-cig.
