When switching from smoking to vaping, figuring out the nicotine strength that is right for you is crucial. An inadequate level will not assuage your physical withdrawal symptoms, making you more likely to revert to combustible cigarettes while too much can make you feel sick, also adversely affecting your vaping experience. Determining the optimum level takes time and involves some trial and error.

When to Decrease Your Nicotine Strength

Most former heavy smokers or those who had previously been smoking for many years start their transition from traditional cigarettes to e-cigs with the strongest option available. Since their bodies are used to a high level of nicotine, starting out with the 2.4% nicotine –  27 mg option, for instance, provides them with enough of the substance to manage their cravings, hence decreasing the temptation to smoke again.

However, if you start feeling nauseous and dizzy or get a headache after a vaping session, it might be a sign that that nicotine level is too high for you. This is dangerous not only because it may reduce the appeal of vaping for you but also because it may increase your nicotine tolerance. If you find yourself in this situation, consider going down to a medium level such as the 1.8% nicotine – 20 mg option. If you are worried about being tempted to smoke again, we recommend using a tobacco flavor that simulates the rich, traditional taste of cigarettes so that you can continue to enjoy a satisfying experience.

When to Increase Your Nicotine Strength

Some people begin their transition with zero-nicotine e-cigarettes or a lower concentration, such as the 1.6% nicotine – 18 mg level since they want to set ambitious goals for themselves and perhaps hope to, ultimately, be nicotine-free. While setting such lofty goals is commendable, it may be unrealistic as your body may crave a higher level of nicotine.

A less than optimum nicotine level may result in physical withdrawal symptoms, which can manifest itself as an intense urge to smoke, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, insomnia or sleeping problems, irritability, anxiety, and emotional outbursts, just to name a few. If this is the case, consider going one level up until you find a level that works for you. Experimentation is key in finding the ideal concentration that will ensure your success.
